Neurospine Institute Welcomes Dr. Juan Amaya as Surgical Fellow

As an AO Spine certified fellowship training centre, we are excited to announce the addition of Dr. Juan Amaya to our esteemed team. Dr. Amaya has embarked on a 12-month fellowship program at the Institute, bringing his extensive background and passion for spinal surgery to further enrich the practice’s expertise.

With a strong inclination towards science and a deep commitment to enhancing people’s well-being, Dr. Juan Amaya’s journey into medicine was propelled by a desire to make a meaningful impact. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia. His dedication to continuous learning led him to diverse experiences, including a six-month internship at the Harrington Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Hospital.

Driven by his aspiration to excel in the surgical field of Orthopedics, Dr. Amaya pursued residency at Universidad Libre in Barranquilla, Colombia. During his initial year, his fascination with spinal surgery began to flourish, prompting him to explore every avenue for deepening his knowledge in this specialized field. Elective rotations at Hospital Universitario de San Jose in Bogota, Colombia solidified his passion for spinal surgery.

Dr. Amaya’s journey to excellence continued as he embraced international opportunities. His tenure at Centro Hospitalar São João and Hospital CUF in Porto, Portugal, in 2022, expanded his expertise in spinal surgery, particularly in complex cases involving deformities and trauma. More recently, Dr Amaya underwent rigorous training under the mentorship of Dr. John Choi in Melbourne, Victoria. This exposed him to innovative techniques, including minimally invasive surgery (MISS), lateral and single-position surgery, unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE), and robotic-assisted surgery.

“I am thrilled to join the Neurospine Institute family, learning from the region’s foremost spinal surgeons. This next step is pivotal for my growth as a surgeon and as an individual,” Dr. Amaya stated.

Dr. Amaya’s dedication, international exposure, and passion for spinal surgery make him an invaluable addition to the Neurospine Institute’s team of experts. The Institute eagerly anticipates the contributions Dr. Amaya will bring to its mission of advancing spinal healthcare and improving patients’ lives.
