Our team at Neurospine Insitute has just returned from an incredible SpineWeek2023 conference in Melbourne. This conference is an international event that brought together multiple prestigious spine societies to share in:
- Their surgical experience
- Exchange research ideas
- Further improve the quality of care for those undergoing spinal surgeries
- And innovate the current scope of surgical techniques
Not only did our team win an award, our Neurospine Foundation Research team submitted a total of 6 abstracts to the conference and were successful in all 6 submissions for presentations, poster presentations and e-posters. Our presenters/project coordinators and their corresponding projects are outlined below.
- Longer wait times between referral and lumbar decompression surgery may contribute to poorer patient reported outcomes – Dr Andrew Berg
- First long-term follow-up results on wear-induced osteolysis following cervical total disc replacement using the M6-C™ Artificial Cervical Disc – Dr Sonja Haeckel
- Surgical, radiographic and patient-reported outcomes following multilevel lumbosacral fusion utilising a novel minimally invasive multi-incision technique – A/Prof Greg Cunningham
- Surgical and patient-reported outcomes support Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion for the treatment of low back pain – Miss Alana Celenza
- A hybrid atlantoaxial fusion technique utilising a transarticular and C1 lateral mass screw technique: investigation of surgical and patient-reported outcomes, and finite element analyses of the biomechanical properties – A/Prof Greg Cunningham
- The effect of varying levels of uncinatectomy in cervical total disc replacement on range of motion at mid-term follow-up – Dr Jessica Gaff
We are incredibly proud of Dr Sonja Haeckel, former NSIWA Orthopaedic Fellow, as recipient of the The Johnston Award (Spine Society Australia). This was a tremendous achievement reflective of her commitment to both the practice of orthopaedic surgery as well as to ethical and informative scientific medical research.
Additionally, Spine Surgeon Dr Greg Cunningham and Research Assistant Miss Alana Celenza’s poster presentations were selected for the top 10 poster presentation session with Spine Society Australia. Their presentations focused on effectively communicating transformative scientific medical research in both a succinct and informative way – well done team!
Overall, each of NSIWA’s 6 presentations demonstrated the vast range of project topics that we investigate at Neurospine Foundation. Neurospine Foundation will continue to partake in upcoming conferences and continue to collaborate with spine societies from around the world, to further support the growth of spinal surgical care, technologies and spinal research.
